EN. Insides, 2019

Insides unveils the power of smell in our understanding of memories and the traces they leave. The word ‘Insides’ makes use of its connotations of ‘within’ and ‘the interior’ but also of the biological use to mean the ‘bowel’. Draped across the room, the hanging, white bed sheets disperse the perfumes made by the perfumer Harrison Sherwood. The perfumes were chosen and created following a study asking the question: ‘what is the smell of your childhood?’. In taking the form of a cabin or a shelter, the installation invites the spectators to question not just the notions of childhood and memory but also the presence such memories have within the invisible and the nonvisual. This piece was collaboratively made by Harrison Sherwood and myself.

Insides met en lumière le pouvoir de l’odorat au travers de la compréhension de nos souvenirs, leur mémoire et leurs traces. Le terme d’ « Insides » renvoie ici à ses connotations de « l’intérieur », « au sein de », comme « les entrailles », un intérieur plus biologique. Se déployant dans l’espace, des draps blancs suspendus au plafond diffusent des parfums crées par le parfumeur Harrison Sherwood. Ces odeurs furent choisies et réalisées après l’étude-question demandant : « Quel est l’odeur de ton enfance ? ». Cette installation prenant la forme d’une cabane ou d’un abri, invite et questionne le spectateur aux notions de l’enfance et de la mémoire, mais aussi de la presence dans l’invisible, et la nature non visible que les souvenirs peuvent retenir. Cette pièce a été réalisée en collaboration avec Harrison Sherwood.
